Abstract
Analyzing math performance across 76 countries over twenty years, this study explores how gender gaps shift across all achievement levels rather than just looking at averages. The results show that while these gaps change over time, boys often maintain an advantage at the highest performance levels even in countries that appear neutral overall. This suggests a complex paradox where greater societal gender equality does not automatically close the gap for top performers, challenging our traditional understanding of how social progress impacts education.
