LIVES Young Scholar Grants at the University of Lausanne
Eligibility and purpose of the call
The CIR-LIVES UNIL provides financial support for young scholars planning innovative research on the life course. Only non-tenured researchers at the doctoral and post-doctoral levels are eligible as applicants, and we welcome collaborative projects. Main applicants must be enrolled as doctoral students at the University of Lausanne or employed there as post-docs with a contract valid until June 30, 2025.
This call supports innovative life-course research that spans a maximum of 18 months. The upper limit for single-project funding is CHF 10,000. The costs covered by the funding can include data collection, fieldwork, costs related to scientific collaboration (i.e. travel and visits), wages for research assistance (i.e., for a student assistant), etc.
Funding can be used either to write a paper (for PhD students and post-docs) or to develop a new project (for post-docs). A condition for receiving funding is that it must result in a clearly identifiable deliverable within the timeframe specified in the application. Deliverables include a working paper in the LIVES working paper series (and eventually a publication that can be part of a PhD thesis) or a project proposal submission (for post-docs).
All successful applicants commit to (a) implementing the research activities within the proposed timeframe, (b) sending the promised deliverable, (c) associating their new project with the LIVES Centre, and (d) acknowledging the LIVES funding in their output.
Submission
Applications can be sent until November 15, 2024 to caroline.jeanneret@unil.ch. Please submit the following documents in English in one single PDF document (containing the applicant’s last name in the file name):
- A research plan of no more than three pages (formatting: min. 1.5 spacing, 12pt), stating the research question, expected contribution, methods, and expected output/deliverable
- A breakdown of expected costs
- A timeline for the implementation of the project
- A CV with a publication list for all participating applicants
For questions concerning the call, please contact Nicolas Sommet (nicolas.sommet@unil.ch). If you have questions concerning the calculation of costs, please contact Caroline Jeanneret (caroline.jeanneret@unil.ch).
Assessment Criteria
Young scholar grants will be awarded on the basis of the following criteria:
- Quality of the planned research, its potential, and topical fit with the LIVES Centre
- Scientific qualifications of the applicant(s)
Please note that young scholar grants are competitive, as the number of applications generally exceeds the funding available at the LIVES Centre. Smaller projects (that is, applications asking for less than the maximum amount of funding) may have a higher chance of being funded.
Timeline
Acceptance or rejection of projects will be communicated by December 15, 2024. The funding received can only be disbursed in 2025 and deliverables will be due, at the very latest, by August 31, 2026.
